Ngamba Island provides the perfect destination at the end of
a safari trail in Uganda.
This tropical island is located on Lake Victoria, the world's second largest
fresh water lake, only 23 km from Entebbe.
It is home to 38 orphaned chimpanzees that have been rescued from the bush meat
trade.
The trip to the
island takes you right across the equator. Several water bird species such as
pelicans, terns, cormorants, and the fish eagle can be seen along the way
providing spectacular photographic opportunity. Overnight trips, a quality
luxury tented camp, with top of the range catering services are available for
visitors interested in spending the night on this tropical island; and for lucky
overnighters, there is a rare opportunity of seeing hippos that come to graze
on the island in the night!
The island is also
home to more than 135 bird species including the rare white backed night heron.
Other species that can be seen on the island are the Nile Monitor lizard,
hippos and otters. Fishing trips are available for those interested in angling;
Lake Victoria is famous for its 60 kilograms
and 6ft Nile Perch. There are lots of other fish available in this fresh water
lake such as the tilapia.
