Tucked in the North Eastern corner of Uganda's
border with Sudan and Kenya, Kidepo
National Park offers breathtaking Savannah landscapes,
which end in rugged horizon. It is one of Uganda's
most spectacular parks spanning an area of 1,442 square kilometers and harbors
scenery unsurpassed in any other park in East Africa.
For the birders, Kidepo
Valley National
Park is a "heaven"; it boasts a bird list of over 475 species,
a total second only to Queen
Elizabeth National
Park. Amongst the host of dry, eastern
"specials" not found in any other Ugandan national park are some of East
Africa's rarest and most sought after birds such as Black-breasted Barbet and
Karamoja Apallis.
Of the 80 species of mammals listed in 1971, 28 were not known
to occur in any other Ugandan park. Amongst these are such charismatic African
animals as Bat-eared Fox, Carcal, Cheetah and Klipspringer. Other animals
include Elephant, Common Zebra, Buffalo,
and Kongoni. Predators are plentiful and Spotted Hyena, Leopard and Lion are
frequently seen. Oribis are abundant in the Narus Valley,
whilst the dry thorn thickets in the north are home to Guenther's Dik Dik.
Senegal Galago, Side striped Jackal and the White-tailed Mongoose may be
sighted at night. The park also has a very rich and diverse reptile fauna.
